Broadcast journalist, Sarah Teni Babohimah has encouraged women to strive to make a mark in whatever field of work they find themselves.

According to her, doing so will not only set them apart and give them an edge ahead of others but also advance the advocacy for women to be given equal opportunities as their male counterparts  in the job market.

She decried that despite efforts to break gender barriers especially in the world of work, most women continue to be discriminated and stereotyped against.

She noted that women are constantly written off and deny job opportunities due to their biological makeup.

“Some institutions don’t want to employ females, because of menstruation issues, a couple of times you may miss work and they have issues with that, you’ll get pregnant, when you give birth, you will go on leave; they have issues with that. So the girl child is disadvantaged in a lot of ways,” she said on Breakfast News.

She, however, believes the situation can change for better if the few who have gotten opportunities distinguish themselves in their field of endeavours.

“I think if a few girls are given the opportunity , girls who are plumbers, carpenters and all that, if there’s a female there, if you are able to get there, make sure you justify your inclusion. Make sure they don’t have a reason to doubt other girls that may come into that category”.

Sarah said this while speaking on this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.

The day which is observed annually on October 11 is a global platform to advocate the rights of the girl child who continue to be marginalised and deprived.
