A member of the governing New Patriotic Party’s Communication Team in the Upper East Region, Johnson Ayine has taken on flagbearer aspirant of the party, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong over what he termed as divisive and ethnocentric comments by Mr. Agyapong.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central was seen in viral video complaining about a possible dominance of the 2024 Elections by people from Northern Ghana should Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu be elected the NPP flgabearer.
According to him, a number of political parties already have people from that of the country as their leaders thus, the elections would be dominated by one section of the country if his party also elect Dr. Bawumia as its leader.
This, in his view, is unfair and should not be countenance as he questioned why the presidential contest should be populated by candidates from Northern Ghana.
But reacting on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast Today following Mr. Agyapong’s visit to the Upper East Region, Johnson Ayine condemned his utterances as divisive and ethnocentric.
“I was so shocked that he made this kind of statement that seems to be divisive and ethnocentric. It’s not good at all, it must be condemned in no uncertain terms,” he stated.
Mr. Ayine, who said he was taken aback by such comments, argued that all the candidates are Ghanaians and have the right to run for the highest office of the land regardless of their place of origin.
He questioned why Mr. Agyapong will be seeking the votes of the people of the North if he does not want them to be at the forefront of politics.
“The day before yesterday, yesterday and even up today, he is here, what do you want again from the people that you think it’s not good for them to be flagbearers of the party. If at the end of the day, you’re elected and you come to the same people to tell them ‘vote for me’.
How will the people feel? When he made that statement, I was not thinking he would come and campaign here again. Now, you’re here campaigning”.
