Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng says Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is likely to tackle corruption if he is elected president of Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on TV3, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said although comments the NPP’s flagbearer aspirant made in the past could haunt him in his presidential bid, he is straightforward and may commit to the fight against graft in the country should he made leader.
“I think he is straightforward and ostensibly will fight against corruption and so on,” he said of the Assin Central MP.
The renowned surgeon made these comments while assessing the candidates seeking to lead his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He stated that even though there is no ideal leader among the 4 candidates, some of them possess certain qualities that if harnessed and surrounded with the right people in office may bring the country the right leadership and ultimately, the needed development.
“I have not seen one candidate that has all these qualities, it is difficult to get such person. But one or two qualities, yes and if he comes and he can gather people around him who will complement everything and then get a composite body that has all these qualities then Ghana will work”.
Asked whether Kennedy Agyapong is fit to be president, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng alluded to former presidents of the USA, Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, suggesting that the Assin Central MP could offer the country the best of leadership regardless of his bad reputation.
On Mr. Agyapong’s main contender, the Vice-President, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is most vulnerable candidate to the party’s opponents due to his past commentary and does not stand a better chance of triumphing over the opposition NDC’s John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 polls.
He dismissed assertions that the Vice-President is the party’s favourite in the presidential candidate contest, arguing that he is the favourite of the establishment and that members are being whipped to support him.
He further claimed that the government plans to pump resources to ensure that Dr. Bawumia wins the flagbearer contest. This, he alleged, was revealed by the Minister of Finance.
