The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Moses Awenkanaab Awarikaro has urged workers to prioritize their safety in the conflict ravaged Bawku area.
Moses Awarikaro, while appealing to the feuding factions to smoke the peace pipe, advised workers to take cover and seek transfer from the area if their safety cannot be guaranteed.
“What I can say is that if you, the individual worker see that things are not as expected, within where you find yourself, please, we are all reasonable beings, take the steps as expected, and then let leadership be aware. And then we’ll let minister be aware, and then we’ll come to aid and send you to where you can be able to function fully as expected. Or when things are equally normal, then we’ll move along.”
The TUC Regional Chairman was speaking in an interview on State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM as the country marked Labour Day on May 1, 2025 commonly known as May Day in Ghana.
While expressing concern about the insecurity in Bawku, he urged workers in the area to carry out their duties professionally and be circumspect in their commentary.
“All of us should be professional in whatever we do, and equally be circumspect with the type of comments and the commentary we give to issues, and then stick to our work as expected. And I think the people within the enclave, they will equally respect us as such,” he urged.
He noted that some workers have been targeted by the warring factions due to comments the factions consider scornful and thus, urged them to be discreet in their utterances.
Moses Awarikaro, however, observed that the situation has improved lately as the mediation process kicks in but indicated workers will not hesitate to withdraw their services if it degenerates.
