The Bolgatanga Constituency Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Isaac Ayemvoa says the opposition New Patriotic Party is unhappy with the remarkable gains of the local currency on the forex market.
Speaking on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM on Wednesday, Isaac Ayemvoa, better known as Understanding, claimed the party and its members wished the Ghanaian cedi would continue to fall and cost of living shoots up so that they will gain political capital.
This, be believes, is the reason the NPP is discrediting the efforts of the Mahama administration that have culminated into the gains the cedi is making against major international currencies.
“They would have wished that the cedi hadn’t come down. Meanwhile, myself and him go to the market. That lizard rice that was somewhere 300 and plus, today you buy it at 250. That oil, oil last month, that you could buy at 700 Ghana, you are buying it around 500 Ghana. He’s not happy.”
The NDC Constituency Secretary said this in defence of the administration’s decision to impose an additional 1 per litre fuel levy on consumers.
Parliament , on June 3, 2025, passed a bill under a certificate of urgency at the behest of the Mahama administration.
Known as the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, its passage imposed an additional GH¢1 per litre levy on petroleum products in the country.
Minister of Finance Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill before Parliament, explained that it was intended to address the country’s crippling energy sector debt and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
The largest opposition party, however, denounced the tax measure as a betrayal of trust and a further burden on the Ghanaian people.
But Ayemvoa dismissed the claims of the NPP, arguing that prudent management of the economy by the current government has brought commodity prices down significantly and thus, the increment in levy will not burden consumers.
“Ghana government has managed the cedi so well such that we are giving a respite of say five cedis and six cedis. Using that, we are saying that just give us one cedi out of that. Let’s use that and sustain our gains in the energy sector.”
He continued “And the Ghanaian people are ready. They will do it. Because they know that the government is truthful.”
