The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen A-eke Akurugo, on February 17, 2026, sensitized traders at the Mirigu Market on the importance of honouring their tax obligation to the development of the area.

The sensitization forms part of the DCE’s Stakeholders Engagement at Mirigu and Nabango and is intended to improve internal revenue mobilization in the district.

At the market, Mr. Stephen Akurugo inspected the traders’ tax compliance and encouraged them to honour their tax obligation, explaining that it is critical in mobilizing the needed revenue to develop the area and better their lives.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the paramount chief of the Mirigu Traditional Area, the DCE said the district is underperforming in revenue generation and called for collaboration between the assembly and the various communities to enhance the district’s IGF.

“I’m sitting in the office, and I’m looking at what we are able to generate as what we call internally generated funds. The way the inflows are coming is not good. So it means we cannot even have anything to undertake any other project in Mirigu, aside from what central government is doing,” he stated.

On his part the paramount chief of the Mirigu Traditional Area, Naba Anonsona Abisa Anthony Atasige III, attributed the district’s poor revenue generation, particularly in his chiefdom, to the lack of a ready market for farm produce in the area.

Naba Anthony Atesige III said the people of the community, who are predominantly farmers, are often compelled to transport their produce for sale in markets in neighboring districts, depriving the district of revenue from such sales.

He, thus, urged the DCE to see to the provision of a ready market for farmers in the community and deploy tax collectors to the various exit points to address the shortfalls in revenue collection.

“We happen to take our pepper to Navrongo, pay a tax there. What would we use to develop our own communities or our district?”

The chief also called for measures to tackle incessant robbery attacks in the community.

He said the community police station was overwhelmed due to inadequate personnel, leaving residents in a state of fear.
