A lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University has endorsed the confirmation of the Bongo DCE nominee in the Upper East Region, describing the outcome as legitimate despite falling short of unanimous support.
Awinesema Abiire said the nominee, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, secured 44 out of 54 votes cast by assembly members, about 81 percent, which he argued reflects a credible mandate.
“A genuine 81 percent is far much better than a fake 100 percent,” Mr Abiire said in a phone interview on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast News program.
He dismissed claims that the voting pattern was influenced by internal divisions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo area, insisting the outcome did not reflect partisan alignments.
According to him, the votes may instead represent broader frustrations related to local development concerns rather than opposition to the nominee personally.
Mr Abiire described the confirmation process as smooth and transparent, noting that electoral officials clearly outlined procedures and ensured orderly voting.
He said the nominee’s call for unity and collective development should guide the assembly’s next steps, emphasizing the need to bring members together quickly.
With the confirmation completed, Mr Abiire urged the assembly to convene its first ordinary meeting without delay to avoid disruptions to planned activities, including midyear reviews and committee formations tied to development performance assessments.
He also called on the new chief executive to quickly build capacity in local governance and financial management, warning that strong leadership would be needed to work effectively with technical staff and prevent exploitation.
