The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has renewed efforts for the reconstruction of the female dormitory at the Zuarungu Nursing Training College, nearly nine months after a fire outbreak destroyed the facility.
The Minister made the remarks when he participated in this year’s national tree planting exercise at the college. Following the symbolic tree planting ceremony, the principal of the institution took him on a tour of the damaged dormitory to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the fire.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Akamugri disclosed that efforts had already been made to secure funding for the rehabilitation of the facility.
“We did a letter and sent the estimates after fire gutted the female dormitory of Zuarungu Nursing Training College. I sent a letter to the Minister of Education and I sent a letter to GETFund and we have been following up. We were expecting that by now they would have come, but unfortunately it hasn’t happened,” he said.
The Regional Minister expressed concern over the delay in the release of support for the reconstruction project but assured the school authorities that the matter would continue to receive attention.
“Once we are here, it is good that we have seen what it is. This should push us to renew our fight to get it fit for the children to stay in,” he added.
The female dormitory was destroyed by fire on September 29, 2025, leaving students without accommodation and creating significant challenges for the institution.
The Minister’s visit is expected to reignite efforts to secure the necessary funding from the Ministry of Education and GETFund to restore the facility and improve accommodation conditions for students of the college.
