The Inspector General of Police James Oppong-Boanuh has arrived in the Upper East Region as part of a tour of Ghana’s north following recent spate of robbery attacks.
There have been series of robbery attacks and other forms of violent crimes in the Upper East and North East region which has led to the killing of some travelers and loss of cash and other valuables.
It will be recalled that several attacks were carried out on commercial vehicles and trucks carting tomatoes and other goods from Burkina-Faso to the southern part of the country which eventually led to a strike by the transport operators.
A Friday dawn attack by two masked men led to the shooting and killing of two drivers in two separate attacks at Pusu-Namongo in the Talensi district of the upper east region.
Meanwhile, reports show that most of the robbery attacks that were launched on drivers and their vehicle occupants occurred within the northeast and the upper east regions.
Also, commercial tricycle operators in Sandema in the Builsa North district of the upper east region have reportedly petitioned the Municipal Assembly over incessant robbery attacks on traders and commercial vehicles operators in the area.
The IGP as part of his visit is expected to address the media on the robbery situation and measures aimed at beefing up security and safety of residents and travelers.
The IGP’s first point of call will be in the Builsa area. He is also expected to engage with the police administration in the region to strategize on how to bring the situation under control.
