Police in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region have commenced search for one AK 47 rifle which was reportedly used by two armed robbers in a failed robbery attack that led to their death.
The two notorious criminals identified as Yahaya Lawrence, an ex-convict and Awudu Abdul Hakeem who was recently granted bail by the Bolgatanga District Court in a case of possession of ammunition without permit were killed by community members of Nyariga, a suburb of Bolgatanga when they launched an attack on a businessman on Saturday.
Reports gathered by dreamzfmonline.com say the deceased robbers were in possession of an AK 47 rifle which was seized by the angry mob before they were killed.
Police sources say an engagement with the community is underway to trace and retrieve the weapon.
Luck eluded the two armed men who rode on a motorbike and accosted a male trader in an attempt to rob him of his cash and motorbike.
The eyewitness accounts added that the robbery attack failed when the victim managed to disarm his attackers after the rifle failed to fire, leading to a scuffle that got one of the deceased fractured in the hand and incapacitated. Both were overpowered through the support of community members and set ablaze.
However, the said rifle used in the operation was carried away by some unknown persons.
