Students of Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High School in Navrongo in the Kasena-Nankana Municipality have staged a protest over meals served them on campus.
In videos circulating on social media, the students are seen at the school’s administration block with bowls in their hands, chanting “we want food!”.
On Monday, May 22, 2023, the students reportedly returned from classes to a locally prepared rice meal known as ‘Kunkogre’ for lunch.
But displeased with the quality of the meal and the fact that they have been fed with same food continually for a week, the students rejected it and staged a protest, demanding to be served “proper meals”.
Municipal Executive for the Kasena-Nankana Municipality, Joseph Adongo, who gave account of the incident in an interview on Breakfast News, disclosed that the headmistress of the school was running around for food from neighbouring schools to feed them and was yet to return when the protest erupted.
She, however, returned later with food stuffs in her hand, calming the nerves of the disgruntled students.
“During lunch when they went for their lunch, they said they were not interested in the food that was provided and they started saying that they will not eat the food and that they want proper food. So they went around the administration and was just protesting and singing, saying that they are not happy,” the MCE accounted.
“By then, I understand the head was not also around. She was with her colleagues from other schools, trying to get some food stuff for them”.
Mr. Adongo also disclosed that the National Food Buffer Company, the state agency responsible for food supply to the various public SHSs, has since intervened, addressing the apparent food shortage in the school.
“Last night, they had food from buffer stock, they gave them rice, maize and other food stuffs”.
