A lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University Abiire Awineyesima says Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s apology for his and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) defeat in the December elections will renew the trust of party members  in him and  boost his chances in both internal and the 2028 general elections.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated, through this singular act, that he is one, who takes responsibility for the failure of his leadership and is ready to learn useful lessons to better advance the collective interest.

This will not just cement his dominance in the NPP but could also brighten his prospects in the upcoming presidential election in the country, Awineyesima posited.

“With what he’s beginning to do, he’s bringing the party together, he’s taking every responsibility and this is the best way to go. And this opens a door for him. In fact, a massive door,” he stated.

At a meeting with party’s faithfuls in London in the United Kingdom, the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP apologized for the shortcomings of the party-led administration, which many believe contributed to its massive defeat in the last elections.

Dr. Bawumia told the gathering in London that the party had taken stock of its mistakes and will do better if given another chance.

Speaking in an interview on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM, Awineyesima said it was a mark of good leadership that he publicly took responsibility for the party’s defeat and not shift blame.

Away from the public’s eye, however, he said the former flagbearer could detail to party members the specific missteps of the administration that caused their defeat and absolve himself of actions he was not individually responsible.

“The specific message to party members or grassroots, when he’s engaging them, when the media is not part, it’s when he could now detail the specific issues that led to the defeat. By that, he’s not selling out out the party, he’s not shifting blame.”

“He’s now with them (alone) He could now tell them that ‘you could see what the E-levy did. You could see what the betting did among the youth. So he could now detail some of the proposals he presented before the president and the finance minister but they were rejected.”
