Spokesperson for the Upper East Regional Campaign Team of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) says top officials of the Akufo-Addo government, who are endorsing the candidature of Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are doing so in pursuit of their selfish interest.
Speaking in an interview on News Digest, Michael Abogro stated that the said officials fear they will lose their jobs if they do not support the Vice-President’s bid for the party’s flagbearership.
He said their support for him is, therefore, an attempt to secure their jobs and to hold on to power in case the party is retained.
“For want of a better word, those are (stomach) directional pronouncements they (government appointees) are making, self-centeredness. They want to continue to remain in that inner room to control affairs and the rest of the masses will be singing from outside and throwing in the votes whiles they are dancing,” he stated.
But that, Mr. Abogro said, is not a bother to the Alan’s camp since they have the support of the grassroots of the party who form a large size of the electoral college.
According to him, except the few in government, most party members particularly those at the grassroots level are left unattended to after they toiled to bring the party into office.
These members, he stated, are disgruntled and are therefore, rallying behind Mr. Kwadwo Kyerematen, who, they believe, will address their needs if he is elected the party’s flagbearer.
“We are not perturbed about it as Alan group. About 260,000 delegates will be voting on the 4th of November and we are aware that 90 to 95 percent of 260,000 are in the trenches. They are the people who are not even aware that their party is in power”.
He continued “They’re just sitting there as polling station executives doing the work and nothing. Even caterers of school feeding, they haven’t gotten that opportunity but they are the base of the party and that’s where Alan’s support base is. We are not shying away from that”.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are tipped to be the frontrunners in the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Dr. Bawumia, however, appears to have the backing of most of the bigwigs of the party.
In the Upper East Region, for instance, almost all MMDCEs and known party members have declared their support for the Vice-President.
But Mr. Abogro said their camp is not perturbed by this seemingly massive endorsement.
