ELVIS FIGO AWONEKAI, NPP'S UPPER EAST REGIONAL SECRETARY

The Upper East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Elvis Atia Awonekai has teased his intention to contest for the Regional Chairman of the party in the upcoming internal elections of the now opposition party.

This comes five months after he lost in his bid to become Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central in the December 7, 2024 general elections.

Awonekai served as a Deputy Regional Secretary between 2018 and 2022 before winning the 2022 Regional Secretary contest to assume the substantive post.

While serving as Regional Secretary, he ran for the Bolgatanga Central seat in the 2024 general elections but failed to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo.

Some leading party members including Filson Awankua and Andrew Atariwine have criticized his and the Regional Organizer’s decision to enter the parliamentary race while holding key leadership positions in an election the odds were stark against the party, arguing that their parliamentary ambitions distracted them from performing their duties as regional executives and contributed to the party’s humiliating defeat in the region.

Awankua, who has run for the Chairmanship position twice and hinted his intention to contest again, said, in a recent interview, that their decision smacked of irresponsibility, insanity and greediness.

He called on them and all the other executives not to seek re-election again.

But Elvis Awonekai appears to have called the bluff of his critics as he teased his intent not just to re-election but for the highest leadership position in the party in the region.

He posted “Sec4Chairamn” on Facebook, subtly announcing his intent to run for the position of a Regional Chairman in the upcoming internal contest of the NPP.
