Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga has expressed disquiet over the frequent break downs of street lights in the country.

Mr. Asanga observed that street lights in the country break down every now and then, plunging the country’s streets into darkness almost all the time.

He said although government strives to keep the country’s streets lit, the frequent dysfunction of the lightning system makes the efforts fruitless.

He questioned the kind of street lighting system the country has gotten itself.

“What system is it that we chose such that it goes off almost every two weeks. What’s the system? Sometimes, you call them and they just come and work on it and they are at Walewale and the thing is off and then people are calling you to complain. Then you don’t know what to do and we don’t really have direct control over those contractors,” he lamented.

Rex Asanga expressed his worry over the situation in an interview on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio while speaking about moves to fix dysfunctional street lights in the regional capital.

He noted that lights on major streets in the Municipality has been off for long.

While voicing out his displeasure about the situation, he indicated that he had notified the contractor about it and is hopeful that they will be fixed soon.

He also disclosed that the Ministry of Energy is set to hand over management of street illumination to the various assemblies thus, will be going around to inspect and fix broken down ones before the official hand over.

“I called the engineer and drew his attention and he said that they are coming back to fix it because it appears the Ministry of Energy is going to handover. They  coming to inspect and handover.

They said they were going to be in town over the weekends and so I believe this week they should be working on those on those streetlights”.

He is, however, wondering how the assemblies can maintain them given the frequent rate of break downs.
