Former National Chairman aspirant of the governing NPP has accused Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign team of plotting an overwhelming victory for him in the party’s upcoming Super Delegates Conference in a bid to cajole the party to allow him go unopposed in the main presidential primaries.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews TV, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah said although the purpose of the Super Delegates Conference is just to whittle the number of aspirants down to 5, the Vice-President and his team have an ulterior motive.

He said their motive is to ensure that Dr. Bawumia secure a landslide margin in tomorrow’s conference so that they could push for him to go unopposed in the main conference in November.

“For some people, they have a different agenda, they want to look at the percentage of win, a margin of victory and from that they come in with the main agenda.

I’m talking about Bawumia Camp. They want to be able to manoeuvre certain things, they sprayed a lot of money to people. We all know all these things are to get them to get overwhelming victory even in this event,” he stated.

“This is not the main event. This is the event before the event. But they are working very hard so that they can come up with the agenda so that they can say ‘look here, this man is very very popular’”.

Citing supposed comments by the Majority Leader of Parliament, who is a known supporter of Dr. Bawumia to buttress his claim, Dr. Amoako Baah alleged that the Vice-President and his team are already dolling out monies in a bid to induce delegates to vote him in furtherance of their hidden agenda.

“Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, we all know he is a Bawumia supporter, he said it before. Now he says if any candidate get more than 70 percent, it will be wise for the party to throw their support behind such a candidate and make him go unopposed. That’s the agenda for them”.

The former KNUST’s Political Science lecturer, however, vowed to resist any move to allow Dr. Bawumia go uncontested in the November primaries as he said such an act will be in breach of the party’s constitution.

“But I have said even if the margin is 95, we will not agree, because it is against the constitution. We will still demand the holding of the main conference. Their agenda is to use this as an excuse to let him go unopposed. We will not agree to that”

He took on the Vice-President for what he is said is his ungratefulness.

According to him, despite Dr. Bawumia not being member of the NPP prior to his nomination as running mate, the party was magnanimous enough to waver its rules for him to occupy the second most important position.

This, he argued, was a rare honour done the Vice-President hence, he should have been grateful and allow leading members of the party, who had sacrificed their ambition of being running mate for him, to also have a turn in the topmost leadership of the party.

He posited that Dr. Bawumia’s quest to lead the NPP after serving as running mate for 12 years and Vice-President for 2 terms smacks of greediness and ungratefulness.

The governing party will tomorrow, August 26, 2023, hold a Special Delegates Conference to whittle the number of aspirants down in line with the party’s constitution.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is a lead contender, has been tipped to secure not less than 70 percent of the votes.
