In its 8-year stay in office, the Akufo-Addo administration failed to continue extension of electricity in the Kasena-Nankana West District, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Stephen A-eke Akurugo has claimed.

Stephen Akurugo said that the administration abandoned a rural electrification project that the National Democratic Congress government had started and also failed to initiate any such programme that would have ensured electricity was extended to households and communities without such basic necessity.

As a result, a greater part of the district remains without electricity, breeding insecurity and hampering  development of the area, he lamented.

“They came and met the rural electrification program done by NDC. But for the 8 years,  they have not added,” he stated.

“We went on campaign and I’m from Sirogo. What was left is still what is in the community. So you see some people would now go and get their own sticks or poles and they just connect the lights. They need lights to do work.”

The DCE was speaking in an interview on Breakfast Today last Wednesday on his plans for the district as its head.

He blamed the lack of electricity in parts of the district for the poor academic performance in the area and  indicated his resolve to ensure communities without such necessity are provided.

He is also hoping to leverage the policies of the Mahama administration to boost agricultural activities and food production in the area as it is the main occupation of majority of residents.

Stephen Akurugo decried poor road network in the district, stating that main bridges, which broke for years now, remain unfixed, a situation, he said, disrupts movement and economic activities.

He pledged to see to the improvement of the district’s road network and repair of the broken bridges.

Improvement in the quality of education in the district is among his list of priorities as he said he will improve existing infrastructure and ensure the building of new ones.
