The Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club has begun the construction of toilet facilities at Kalbeo in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region as part of efforts to improve sanitation and end open defecation in the community.
The initiative forms part of a five-year project aimed at addressing poor sanitary conditions in the area.
Under the project, the Club has constructed twenty (20) dual micro-flush toilet units, each consisting of separate facilities for males and females, bringing the total number of toilets to forty (40) to serve various households.
The Club plans to construct an additional twenty (20) dual units in the second phase of the project. Officials of the Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club have assured residents who are yet to benefit from the first phase to remain calm, indicating that work on the second phase will commence soon.
Poor sanitation and open defecation remain major challenges not only in Kalbeo but also in many parts of the Upper East Region. According to the Club, the dual design of the facilities ensures that both males and females are adequately catered for, which is expected to promote proper utilization of the toilets.
Apostle Phillip Yeli-Oni Nabizee, an official of the Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club, emphasized that the Club is committed to eliminating open defecation in the community.
“Our main aim is to eradicate open defecation. Initially we said we were doing 80 toilets, and with the 80, we have so far done 40. We are currently challenged by the exchange rate differentials and might not be able to do the 40. We have done per household that is 20 dual units, making it 40, so the women can use one and the men will use the other,” he stated.
