A former Upper East Regional Women’s Organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hajia Charity Rahinatu Haruna Iddris, has made a generous Ramadan donation to the Upper East Regional Chief Imam, his Deputy, and the Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), presenting hundreds of bags of rice, sugar, and oil valued at thousands of Ghana cedis to support them through the holy month of fasting.
Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by over 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. It is a period of dawn-to-dusk fasting, intense prayer, deep spiritual reflection, and charitable giving. Muslims refrain from food, drink, and all sinful behaviour during daylight hours—a practice known as Sawm—which constitutes one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The fast is aimed at cultivating taqwa, meaning God-consciousness, while fostering empathy for the less privileged who face hunger daily.
Central to the spirit of Ramadan is charity and communal sharing, particularly through the breaking of the fast at sunset—known as Iftar—which brings families and communities together around a shared meal. Donations of food items such as rice, sugar, and cooking oil are therefore not merely acts of goodwill; they carry profound religious significance by helping Muslim households and leaders sustain themselves and their communities through the sacred month.
It is in the spirit of this that Hajia Rahinatu made the presentation of 200 bags of rice, 100 bags of sugar, and 100 boxes of oil to the three beneficiaries.
The Regional Chief Imam received 10 bags of rice—each bag containing five packs of 25 kg of rice—along with five bags of sugar and 25 litres of oil. His deputy received five bags of rice—each also containing five packs of 25 kg of rice—two bags of sugar, and three boxes of Frytol oil, with each box containing 12 pieces of 1.5-litre oil. The NDC Youth Wing received their share, comprising 43 bags of rice—each bag containing five packs of 25 kg of rice—and five boxes of oil, with each box containing 12 pieces.

Speaking to the media after the presentation, Hajia Rahinatu said the gesture was a heartfelt expression of solidarity with the Muslim community during one of Islam’s most revered seasons. She called on the Almighty God to grant peace, protection, and answered prayers to all Muslims throughout the Ramadan period and prayed that their fasts be accepted.
“We are all one people, and it is in seasons like this that we must show love and care to one another. I pray that God hears the prayers of our Muslim brothers and sisters during this holy month and that this small contribution eases their burden as they observe this blessed period of fasting and worship,” she said.
The Upper East Regional Chief Imam expressed profound gratitude to Hajia Rahinatu for the thoughtful and timely gesture. He described the donation as a demonstration of unity, goodwill, and respect for the Muslim faith, and prayed for continued blessings upon the Deputy Director General and all those who showed kindness to the Muslim community during Ramadan.
