The Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdallah Jonathan Salifu, says the main opposition party’s criticisms of the Mahama administration’s management of the economy are out of jealousy.
According to him, the current administration’s achievements, particularly in the economy, have unsettled its main opponent, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and threatened the opposition party’s fortunes in the next elections.
This, he said, is the reason the party and its members have resorted to finding faults with policies he believes are sound, in an attempt to belittle the successes being chalked up under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.
“They are only being jealous because we have found an antidote to the wobbly cedi situation we used to be bedeviled with in the past. You know, this foreign exchange issue has been a very big problem,” he stated.
Abdallah Jonathan recalled the economic crisis that the country suffered under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration and the quick turnaround witnessed under the current administration.
He attributes the current situation to sound fiscal policies and prudent management, which he argued were absent under the erstwhile administration.
“The president’s disciplinary measures and prudent management of the economy are what have brought us to this level.”
He made these comments while dismissing his counterpart in the NPP, Peter Ayinbisa’s criticisms of the activities of Goldbod and the government’s handling of the local currency.
Speaking on State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM, Peter Ayinbisa claimed the Mahama administration had resorted to injecting millions of dollars to stabilize the local currency, which he said was unsuitable, and accused Goldbod of buying gold from illegal sources.
But Abdallah Jonathan dismissed the accusations as a mere attempt to downplay the successes chalked up under the Mahama administration out of jealousy.
He argued that the establishment and operation of Goldbod have shown to be an antidote to the free fall, and this, he said, the NPP is envious of.
