Dr. Samuel Akonga, an aspiring regional communications officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, has outlined the party’s internal communication structure while urging greater unity as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Dreamz FM’s “State of Our Nation” program with Nicholas Azebire, Dr Akonga said joining the party’s communications team involves a structured vetting and mentorship process designed to ensure discipline and message coherence.

According to him, prospective communicators undergo background checks, followed by a period of “understudy,” where they participate in phone-in radio discussions while senior members assess their performance.

“They look at your level of acumen and how you present your arguments. After months of monitoring, you are attached to a senior communicator who guides you,” Dr Akonga said.

He added that this system helps prevent infiltration and protects sensitive party information.

Dr Akonga also weighed in on recent controversy surrounding the status of a communicator reportedly excluded from the team, saying such issues should be handled internally.

“In my candid opinion, it should have been resolved behind the scenes. Public exchanges do not help party cohesion,” he said.

The NPP is currently undergoing internal restructuring, beginning with polling station elections and culminating in regional executive contests. Dr Akonga expressed confidence in his chances, citing support from delegates and a strategy focused on grassroots engagement.

He acknowledged internal competition and “Machiavellian tactics” typical of party politics but emphasized the need for unity.

“We need a reset and new energy in the communication team. The goal is to reconnect with the grassroots and present our policies effectively,” he said.
