The Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), George Abradu-Otoo, has embarked on a two-day working visit to senior high schools and warehouses in the Upper East Region, as part of efforts to assess food security, timely supply and storage capacity across the region.
The visit took Abradu-Otoo to some of the region’s prominent senior high schools, including Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School and Bolgatanga Technical School, where he held meetings with heads and administrators to get a firsthand account of the food supply situation on the ground.
During the engagements, school heads used the opportunity to raise a number of concerns surrounding food supply, packaging and storage — challenges they say have persisted for some time and require urgent attention from NAFCO and relevant government agencies.
During a meeting with the heads and staff of Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School, Mr. Abradu-Otoo stated that “I’m here to listen to the school’s concerns regarding food and food supplies and to explore possible solutions”.
Beyond the schools, the NAFCO CEO also inspected warehouses at Vea and Zuarungu, to assess their condition and capacity to support the storage and distribution of food items to schools in the region.
The working visit comes at a time of heightened public attention on food supply to senior high schools nationwide, following CHASS’s threat to shut down schools over a feeding crisis triggered by delays in the release of funds for perishable food items. Abradu-Otoo used the visit to engage directly with stakeholders on the ground, listen to their concerns and reaffirm NAFCO’s commitment to its mandate of ensuring food security in Ghana’s senior high schools.
