A lady believed to be a native of the Upper East Region has made a painful revelation about how parents give out their daughters in marriage without collecting any substantial bride price, sparking widespread reactions on social media.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the lady, whose identity is not known, lamented that men come to ask for the hands of women in marriage and their parents accept only cola nuts, a dog, and a small amount of money as bride price.
She described the situation as deeply painful, saying she can no longer keep quiet about it.
The lady specifically mentioned communities including Sandema, Weaga, and Fumbisi as areas where the practice is prevalent, saying women are virtually being given out to men at little to no cost.
“Come to Sandema, Weaga, Fumbisi. They don’t collect anything. They are just dashing us the ladies out free of charge to the men. They collect cola, dog and small money. I will be a liar if I say it doesn’t pain me,” she said.
Her comments have since sparked debate online, with many weighing in on the cultural practice and its implications for how women are valued in marriage in some parts of the region.
