It has emerged that 17 pregnant girls are participating in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.

The District Chief Executive for the area made the revelation during his sessional address at the Assembly’s First Ordinary Meeting.

This number is part of a total of 1,143 candidates currently sitting for the examination, comprising 496 boys and 647 girls. “1,143 candidates are currently sitting for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the district. This number consists of 496 boys and 647 girls. Among the WASSCE candidates, 8 students living with disabilities and 17 pregnant students are participating in the examination.”

Similarly, during the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Kassena Nankana West District recorded three pregnant girls participating, while 21 candidates were absent from the examination. “It is worth noting that despite the total registration figures, 21 candidates were absent during the examination period. Additionally, the district recorded the participation of 3 pregnant candidates and 5 students living with disabilities (PWDs), demonstrating efforts toward inclusive access to education and assessment opportunities.”

This was disclosed by the Kassena Nankana West District Chief Executive, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, during his sessional address at the Assembly’s First Ordinary Meeting.

According to the DCE, the participation of the pregnant girls and candidates with disabilities reflects the district’s commitment to ensuring that no learner is excluded from educational opportunities. “Further reflecting the district’s commitment to ensuring that no learner is excluded from educational opportunities.” He said.
