The District Chief Executive for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, has defended the government’s decision to convert the district’s abandoned E-block facility into a boarding school, saying the move will ensure the infrastructure is fully utilized.
Speaking on Dreamz FM, Mr Nabwomya rejected claims that the facility is located too far from communities to serve students effectively.
He said the school is surrounded by several communities, including Yagzore, Shega, Damolg and Kpatia, making it accessible to potential students.
“The school has never been far from communities,” he said, adding that while the institution will operate as a boarding school, it will still admit day students.
The DCE said the government decided to repurpose the facility after it remained unused for years.
“We made a promise that we would utilize it and make sure it is patronized rather than being left idle,” he said.
Mr Nabwomya acknowledged that stakeholders had previously hoped the structure would be converted into a college of education but said the Ministry of Education opted for a different use for the facility.
He explained that the central zone of the Upper East Region, which includes Talensi, Nabdam and Bongo districts, currently lacks a teacher training college despite hosting a large student population.
The DCE said local authorities remain committed to expanding educational opportunities in the district and ensuring government infrastructure is put to productive use.
