Plans to establish a teacher training college in the Talensi District remain on course despite the government’s decision not to convert the district’s E-block facility into a tertiary institution, District Chief Executive John Millim Nabwomya said.

According to Mr Nabwomya, Member of Parliament Daniel Mahama is spearheading efforts to launch the college privately while authorities continue lobbying for government support.

The DCE said the MP has proposed using his personal residence, which has 12 bedrooms and a large compound, as a temporary site for the institution.

“He even promised to donate about GH¢300,000 as seed capital and provide a pickup vehicle to support the school’s operations,” Mr Nabwomya said.

He noted that an education committee is working on the project and exploring long-term options for acquiring land for a permanent campus.

Mr Nabwomya said the initiative is aimed at addressing teacher shortages in the district by training more educators locally.

The DCE also praised the MP’s educational support programs, revealing that nearly 500 students from Talensi have received partial scholarships.

Beneficiaries include students in teacher training colleges, nursing training institutions, universities and postgraduate programs, he said.

The scholarship program is expected to continue annually, with assistance varying according to the academic level and needs of beneficiaries.

Beyond education, Mr Nabwomya said the MP has supported health and infrastructure projects, including road improvements and interventions aimed at expanding access to social services across the district.
