Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a member of the National Democratic Congress before defecting to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Upper East Regional Secretary of the NDC has claimed.

Speaking in an interview on State of Our Nation, Mr. Donatus Akamukre said Dr. Bawumia grew up in an NDC family and was an active member of the party until when he was nominated in 2008 to partner Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

It was only upon his nomination that the Vice President left is “original” party and joined the NPP, he added.

“Who didn’t know that H. E. Bawumia was an NDC man? Bawumia family was entirely NDC. He was originally NDC before Nana Addo brought him and sidestepped their rules and put him there,” he stated.

Mr. Akamukre, however, believes Dr. Bawumia would have been fired from the NDC if had stayed longer.

According to him, the Vice President has not been honest in his public utterances and that makes unfit to continue being a member of the NDC.

This, the NDC’s Regional Secretary said, might have informed his decision to resign from the party.

“He jumped over to NPP because probably at a point in time, he realized that his way of life is not suitable in NDC. That’s why he has gone to NPP”.

Then Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Bawumia was selected by Nana Addo as his running mate in the 2008 polls.

His selection was, however, met with stiff opposition by stalwarts of the NPP who saw him not only as an outsider but also inexperienced to be given such a post.

But Nana Addo launched a strong defence of his choice and maintained him in subsequent elections.

Mr. Akamukre claimed the opposition against Dr. Bawumia’s nomination was because of his history with the NDC.
