Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdallah Jonathan Salifu says the party will collapse ahead of the 2024 General Elections if former president, John Dramani Mahama pulls out of the race.
Speaking on State of Our Nation today, Mr. Abdallah Jonathan asserted that the former president is currently the only hope of the opposition party going into the election and it will be in limbo should he withdraw.
“I can tell you if people like Mahama say they won’t contest again, the NDC can collapse temporary. Because we will not know what to do”.
He said this while making the point that the party has not sought to prevent any qualified person from contesting in its upcoming primaries.
Mr. Abdallah Jonathan stated that although Mr. Mahama is the toast and heart of the NDC, others have been allowed to contest him.
“You see the party has not protected anybody. Even president Mahama (is being contested). Currently, he is the toast of the party. The race was opened to anybody who was qualified and I think that those who decided to withdraw did that on their own”.
He Aadded “there is no dispute that there was some talking behind the scenes but with all that, we didn’t still insist that if you don’t get down or withdraw, we will disqualify you or not allow you contest. They were still allowed”.
The opposition party has scheduled to hold its presidential and parliamentary primaries on May 13 as part of preparations ahead of the 2024 Elections. It opened nominations in March and has since vetted both presidential and parliamentary aspirants.
John Dramani Mahama, who is seeking to lead the party’s comeback bid, is being contested by two others.
He is, however, the favourite of the contest as many have tipped him to win with a landslide margin.
