The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region is worried about activities of its Nabdam Constituency executives which it said could create mistrust in its internal electoral processes and divide its fronts in the area.
Regional Communication Officer of the party, Abdallah Jonathan Salifu disclosed that executives of the NDC in the area have taken sides in its upcoming parliamentary primaries and are openly campaigning for their preferred aspirants.
Expressing grave concern over the issue, Mr. Abdallah Jonathan asserted that the situation could pose dire consequences for the party in the 2024 Elections.
“It is a great danger to the party, a serious problem,” he declared.
He explained that the actions of the executives are likely not to only create mistrust in the processes and raise tension in the party but also make it difficult for reconciliation after the primaries .
“They are supposed to oversee the organization of this very elections so if you’re seen taking sides then you can’t be the referee. Especially the repercussions after the elections are even more grievous than what we are seeing now, unity. For now, nobody is bitter. everybody has the hope that he is winning but immediately results are declared, they begin to think about who contributed to their defeat. They’ll begin to mention executives. So They’ll not even want to see them”.
He added, “Sometimes, when we call them for reconciliation, they’ll tell you ‘if executive A, B,C are involved, I won’t come because they contributed to my defeat’. We don’t want a repeat of that. We are saying that Constituency executives wash your hands”.
Although the regional leadership, he indicated, have admonished them to desist from such conduct which threatens the fortunes of the opposition party, no penal action will be taken against them since its electoral guidelines does not clearly bar executives from taking sides in internal contest.
Mr. Abdallah Jonathan is, however, confident that the party’s admonition will yield positive results and avert the looming danger.
Three persons have been cleared by the vetting committee of the NDC to contest for the party’s ticket in the constituency. They include the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, legal practitioner, Lamtiig Apanga and one Zuuri Francis Sampana.
Political watchers, however, say the race is between the incumbent MP and Lamtiig Apagna.
