Ghanaian artiste and entrepreneur Yitah Wilbur Wejah , popularly known as Bill Gucci, says his journey into music was driven by personal loss and has since evolved into a major part of his identity alongside multiple business ventures.
Speaking on Dreamz FM’s “Breakfast Today” with host James Nana Tsiquaye, the Navrongo-born musician said he began making music as a way to cope with the death of his father in 2015.
“I got into music purposely to ease my mind,” he said. “At that point, I thought life was over.”
Gucci, said the loss initially left him in denial, recounting how he once attempted to text his late father months after his passing before fully coming to terms with the reality.
Despite the emotional setback, he said his father had already laid a strong foundation for him, easing his transition into adulthood.
Beyond music, Gucci described himself as a businessman with interests in real estate, construction, transportation, farming and barbering, noting that many of his ventures remain largely unknown to the public.
“It’s music that brought me to social media,” he said. “There’s a lot going on with me that people don’t even know about.”
He said balancing music and business contributed to his decision to drop out of the University for Development Studies, where he had been studying public health.
“My construction business needed my attention,” he said, adding that he intends to return to school in the future.
Gucci said he began writing music around 2012, crediting his junior high school experience, where students were encouraged to write poems, for nurturing his songwriting skills.
His recent song “Peace of Mind,” he said, reflects personal struggles rather than material concerns.
“Peace of mind is not about money,” he said. “It’s about life itself.”
