Spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye says the Vice-President should be commended for running his campaign for the flagbearer position on his own resources.
Miracles Aboagye said although Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has the privilege and is bound by State Protocols to use state resources for his travels around the country, he has strived to ensure that his personal ambition does not conflict with his duties a Vice-President.
This, he stated, is the reason he has made arrangements for his transportation for the campaign different from the Vice-Presidential convoy.
“If you look how the manner in which the Vice-President has carried himself throughout the campaign period, he has shown the way. He introduced novelties has done so far in our body politics since probably the 4th Republic,” he stated.
“He started off his campaign using a campaign bus. The idea is to ensure that the long convoy that comes with his movement is separated from the campaign of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a flagbearer and that for me, I think it is very commendable”.
According to him, the decision by Dr. Bawumia to use a bus for his rounds was vehemently resisted by his security details as it is against the State Protocols.
But the Vice-President, he stated, insisted on using his personal resources for his presidential bid as he does not want to be seen abusing his office.
Miracles Aboagye, who described Dr. Bawumia’s action as unprecedented in the Fourth Republic, said his boss should be commended for setting an example worth emulating.
“For the first time in the history of this country, we have the sitting Vice-President, he is not enjoined by any law to ignore his protocols”.
“It was actually a fight between the Vice-President and his state protocols for them to even agree on this innovation because they feel responsible for him and they believe that they have to put in place the logistics and structures to move him as a Vice-President. You can imagine, there’s a fine line in separating the Vice-President of Ghana and Dr. Bawumia as a flagbearer”.
He made these remarks in an interview on JoyNews TV ahead of the Special Delegates Conference of the party.
The Vice-President, who is seeking to lead the governing New Patriotic Party for the 2024 Elections, has been spotted on a number of occasions travelling on a bus with his team for his campaign around the country.
While some commended him for not using his position for personal gain, others said it is a populace act and attempt to win votes.
