The government plans to recruit thousands of health workers to support its new free primary health care initiative, according to policy advocates.

A member of the Regional Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michael Nangena said about 15,000 nurses are expected to be recruited to strengthen the workforce needed to implement the policy.

He also highlighted plans for district assemblies to construct additional CHPS compounds annually to improve access.

Funding for the program, Mr Nangena said, will come from multiple sources, including allocations from the National Health Insurance Scheme, oil revenues and donor support.

The policy has been championed by President John Dramani Mahama as part of broader healthcare reforms.

Mr Nangena dismissed claims that the initiative is merely a rebranding effort, arguing that it introduces structural changes and sustainable funding mechanisms.

“This is a comprehensive policy designed to improve healthcare delivery and reach more people,” he said.
