The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) has warned government against any clandestine attempt to divide its front and thwart actions it has planned to carry out to press home its demands.
Francis Wuni, the Upper East Regional Secretary of GRNMA, said any such move will likely escalate tensions and consequently, grind the country’s healthcare system to a halt.
“This is to government. In our history, in 1992, we were to go on strike, the government at the time influenced three of our top people to disrupt the strike action and that became the historical strike action. That was when our action took effect from 18th May 1992 to 26th June 1992, lasting six weeks. It had to take chief imams and religious leaders to come in,” he stated.
“We are praying that nobody is influencing this.”
The warning comes after a number of nurse unions broke ranks with the umbrella association, GRNMA and distanced themselves from its industrial action.
The GRNMA, on May 28, 2025, declared a series of industrial action that will see to the gradual withdrawal of services of its members to demand the implementation of a “Collective Agreement” it had with its employer, government.
The association accused government of foot-dragging implementation of the agreement and said it was not rescinding its decision until the employer honour its part of the bargain.
But hours after it announced the industrial action, some nursing groups denounced the planned action as a unilateral decision.
A statement issued by leadership of the four nursing groups claimed they had unanimously agreed with GRNMA a day prior to hold on with any such action for further and broader consultation and were shocked that the umbrella association was acting in contradiction of the collective resolution.
They, therefore, called on their members to continue service delivery and disregard the industrial action.
But speaking in an interview on Thursday on State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM, Francis Wuni, while dismissing these claims, warned government against any attempt to divide the nursing front.
He said such move in the past intensify their actions and may spell doom for the country in the current circumstances.
