Bolgatanga Central Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Isaac Ayemvoa, has defended Ghana’s judicial processes and criticised attacks against members of the judiciary.
Speaking on Dreamz FM’s State of Our Nation programme, Mr Ayemvoa described recent public comments directed at a judge by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as reckless and unacceptable.
“I’m worried and scandalised that we have to be praising these characters,” Mr Ayemvoa said.
According to him, lawyers and political leaders must pursue legal remedies through the courts instead of publicly attacking judges and undermining confidence in the judiciary.
“If a judge has misconducted himself in a manner you don’t like, go back to the higher courts,” he stated. “The avenues are still there.”
Mr Ayemvoa argued that disagreements with judicial decisions should not justify insults or personal attacks against judges.
“You can criticise the judgment or conduct of a judge, but you don’t cross a certain line,” he said.
He accused some political actors of inciting public anger against judicial officers, warning that such conduct could endanger the safety and integrity of the judiciary.
“When you insult a judge like that, you are throwing him to the prey,” Mr Ayemvoa stated.
He further called for responsible political discourse and urged leaders to set good examples for younger generations.
“What are we doing to the next generation?” he asked. “We should not encourage somebody to set up a studio in his house and go at people anyhow.”
Mr Ayemvoa maintained that while judicial decisions can be challenged legally, public attacks against judges threaten Ghana’s democratic institutions.
