Ghana’s government is set to deploy thousands of medical equipment items to primary healthcare facilities as part of its new free primary healthcare initiative, according to an Upper East Communications member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michael Nangena.

The NDC’s Communicator said the policy includes the provision of delivery beds, incubators, diagnostic tools and oxygen equipment to community-level health centers to strengthen service delivery.

“In total, about 24,000 pieces of equipment will be distributed,” Mr Nangena said during a radio discussion on Dreamz FM.

He explained that the initiative covers preventive care such as health screenings, maternal and child health services, and treatment of common illnesses at the primary level.

According to him, the move is expected to improve early diagnosis and reduce referrals to higher-level hospitals.

Mr Nangena said additional infrastructure such as health kiosks will be introduced in communities that do not meet the population threshold for CHPS compounds.

The policy, launched by President John Mahama, is expected to be implemented in three phases, with nationwide coverage as the long-term goal.
