The Republic Bank PLC has commissioned and handed over a mechanised borehole to the people of Pwalugu community in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region to provide access to safe drinking water.

The intervention came after a JoyNews documentary highlighted the severe difficulties residents of Pwalugu face in accessing drinking water. The documentary, produced by JoyNews’ Albert Sore, brought national attention to the water crisis affecting the community.

As part of Republic Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, the bank responded to the documentary and provided the borehole within six months of the broadcast. The project was completed and handed over to the community to ease their long-standing water challenges.

Speaking to the media after the commissioning of the facility, the Managing Director of Republic Bank, Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku, acknowledged the work done to highlight the water challenge facing the people of Pwalugu. He said the bank intervened as part of its social corporate responsibility aligned with global development goals.

“As part of our (Republic Bank) social corporate responsibility, we have chosen 4 goals out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: water and sanitation, education, health and climate action. This water project falls directly under one of the chosen goals, to get the people of Pwalugu a good source of drinking water,” Dr. Dzoboku said.

Republic Bank operates a branch in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region and has been actively involved in community development projects across Northern Ghana. The commissioning of the Pwalugu borehole reflects the bank’s commitment to improving the lives of people in the communities where it operates and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The mechanised borehole is expected to significantly improve access to clean drinking water for residents of Pwalugu and surrounding areas, reducing the burden on community members, particularly women and children, who previously had to travel long distances to fetch water.

Community members expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for the timely intervention and called on other corporate organizations and philanthropists to support the community with additional development projects.
