The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has attributed to widespread power outages in parts of the Upper East and Northern East Regions to recent rainstorms.

Most parts of the two regions have faced power supply challenges for days now.

Areas in Yagaba, Sandema, Zebilla, Bawku and Bolgatanga are worst affected

The situation in Yagaba in the North East Region, for instance, is said to have persisted for close to a week now.

But speaking to Dreamz News, the Bolgatanga Area Manager Ben Kofi attributed the power outages to the recent rainstorms.

The storms, he started, brought down some power poles, causing disruption to the transmission lines.

“The rains are preceded by very strong storms and when these things happen, they collapse a number of our polls. Quite a number of them are broken – stretching from Yagaba, to Garu, to Bungkprugu,” he stated.

“Bawku like this, I think, in one rainstorm, we lost about 29 pre-voltage and 17 High tension poles. Yagaba, alone, it was 17 and 12. Zebilla. In fact, it is widespread”.

He, however, indicated that the company’s engineers have been working to resolve the issue and have since restored power to many of the affected areas.

“We don’t have any place that’s entirely off. When faults happen, the first thing you do is to narrow the fault to the faulty part and restore power to the healthy part. So that’s it. They (outages) are isolated”.
