Apuwongo Community cut off from the rest of Bongo District

The Apuwongo community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region is in a state of crisis after the main road connecting them to the district and regional capital was washed away by torrential rains on Sunday, 9th June, 2024.

The devastating incident has left the community entirely cut off, with no access to essential services or vehicular movement.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Roger Abugre, the lack of a culvert at a critical point on the road allowed the water to wash away the soil, destroying the main bridge and making the road impassable.

In a letter written to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Rita Atanga, and cited by Dreamz News, Mr Abugre appealed for immediate attention and assistance to fix the road.

The situation he said is dire, with teachers, nurses, market women and men, and students struggling to access the community as they are at risk of being cut off from vital healthcare and emergency services.

“The situation at hand is so serious and alarming to the extent that in case of any health or any emergency issue, it will be very difficult to handle. Teachers, nurses, market women and men and students find it difficult coming in and going out of the community,” he stated in the letter.

This is not the first time the community has experienced this issue, with similar incidents occurring three times previously.

The community has had to mobilize resources to make the road accessible, but the situation remains precarious.

Mr Abugre’s appeal to the District Chief Executive is a desperate cry for help, urging the authorities to take immediate action to prevent a calamity or loss of precious lives.
