A member of the Upper East Regional New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Council of Elders, Robert Ajene says the party’s quest to stay in power for more than 2 consecutive terms will be an easy task if Vice-president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is made its flagbearer.

Mr. Ajene said the Vice-President has performed creditably well in office, distinguishing himself and winning the hearts of many Ghanaians especially floating voters.

He claimed many floating voters are already yearning for the Vice-President and thus, it will not be difficult marketing him and getting him elected as president in 2024 should he be given the nod as flagbearer of the party.

“Bawumia has distinguished himself that he can do the work, he makes the canvassing easy. I think many delegates believe he is the right person to lead the party in the next election,” he said on State of Our Nation.

“He is somebody who will get all the floating voters who have lined already waiting for him’. And if you say Bawumia, they say ‘we know him, this is what he is doing, he can do it’. But if you say the other man, they will say ‘ah,  what has he done to deserve this’? Then you’ll be whipping the donkey with the wrong cane so you won’t get it to move”.

His comments come after 10 persons filed nominations to contest the flagbearership of the party.

11 persons had picked forms to enter the race. At the close of the nomination process, however, only 10 candidates successfully went through to battle for the presidential candidacy slot.

The 10 include Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trades and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Agric and Food Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto, former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey, former General Secretary Kwabena Adjei Agyepong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong among others.

But the retired educationist said the Vice-President stands tall among the pack.

He argued that Dr. Bawumia, since his emergence at the forefront of the party’s politics, has demonstrated strong commitment to the cause of the party and has toiled earnestly to increase its fortunes.

This, he said, makes him more deserving of the position than any of the contestants.
