A communications member of the opposition National Democratic Congress has defended the government’s handling of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road project, attributing delays to financial constraints linked to debt restructuring.

Speaking on a local radio program, Michael Nangena said the road project was affected by funding challenges after Ghana’s economic difficulties disrupted payments to contractors.

He said the project had not been abandoned, but required time to restore financing arrangements before full work could resume.

“The issue was the suspension of funding, not a lack of commitment,” Mr Nangena said, adding that government efforts are underway to unlock financing and expand the scope of the project.

He explained that authorities are pursuing a dual approach — working to bring the original contractor back to site while carrying out temporary interventions to make the road passable.

Mr Nangena said recent works, including grading and maintenance, were part of ongoing efforts to reduce the burden on commuters while long-term solutions are finalized.

He also rejected claims that the project had been excluded from priority infrastructure plans, insisting it remains a key concern for the government.
