Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, has cut the sod for the construction of dormitory blocks and other facilities to convert the Yameriga Day Senior High School, also known as the E-Block, in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region into a full boarding Senior High School.

The E-Block school was originally constructed under President John Dramani Mahama’s first term in office as part of a nationwide E-Block initiative, and has turned its attention again to completing and upgrading the facility.

While the school was initially planned to operate as a day school, the government has decided to upgrade it with boarding facilities to expand access to secondary education in the Talensi District.

The additional facilities to be constructed include a dining hall with a kitchen, an administration block, 6 units-2 bedroom semi-detached staff bungalows, 2 units 2 Storey dormitory blocks, a fence wall, a headmaster’s bungalow and a security post.

The site for the construction of the additional facilities has been handed over to the contractor, Homeland Resources Limited, to commence work.

Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony, the Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Akamugri, revealed that there are 27 kindergarten, primary and junior high schools currently operating under trees in the area, a situation he said the previous NPP government did nothing to address.

“We have a total of 27 schools under trees that the NPP government did nothing about. We are not here to complain but to solve the infrastructure challenges at the basic level to feed the Yameriga SHS,” he said.

Mr. Akamugri said the NDC government is committed to tackling infrastructure challenges at the basic school level so that pupils can be properly prepared and fed into the Yameriga Senior High School currently under construction.

The sod cutting ceremony was attended by the Regional Minister, the Member of Parliament for Talensi, the District Chief Executive, as well as chiefs and people of the area.
