An opposition communications officer in Bongo has urged the district’s incoming chief executive to adopt a listening and inclusive leadership style to navigate the area’s intense political climate.

Edward Asekere, communications officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency, said the success of the nominee, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, will depend largely on her willingness to engage widely and accept advice.

“She can only become successful if she is a good listener,” Asekere said during an interview on Dreamz FM’s “State of Our Nation” program.

He noted that politics in Bongo can be highly divisive and, at times, confrontational, citing past tensions that affected previous administrations.

According to him, internal conflicts within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) contributed significantly to challenges faced by a former district chief executive, rather than opposition pressure.

“The infighting was too much. She suffered within her own party,” he said.

Mr Asekere stressed that leadership requires humility and a proactive approach to seeking guidance, especially from experienced stakeholders.

“As a leader, you don’t wait for people to come to you. You go to them,” he said.

He added that openness to learning, even from younger or less experienced individuals, can strengthen leadership and improve outcomes for the community.

Mr Asekere warned that failure to listen and adapt could undermine the new administration, particularly once initial public sympathy fades and expectations rise.

“After some time, people will look at what is before them and what is happening,” he said.

He encouraged the nominee to focus on building a lasting legacy through collaboration and responsiveness to community needs.
