DUKE ANABA-FORMER BONGO ASSEMBLY PRESIDING MEMBER

A former presiding member of the Bongo District Assembly in the Upper East Region, Lawyer Duke Anaba has called for unity among assembly members ahead of the confirmation of district chief executive nominee Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, urging them to prioritize development over political divisions.

Speaking on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast Today program, Lawyer Anaba said the confirmation process, while sometimes contentious, should not derail progress in the district following the death of the previous officeholder.

Lawyer Anaba described the confirmation of a district chief executive (DCE) as both “difficult and not difficult,” noting that outcomes often depend less on party politics and more on the nominee’s ability to unify stakeholders and earn trust.

“Usually, it is about the competence of the person, how the person is known at the grassroots and how the person can bring people together,” he said.

He added that internal party dynamics, rather than opposition resistance, typically pose the biggest challenge to confirmations.

“Intra-party politics sometimes makes it very difficult,” Anaba said. “It depends on how the nominee is able to rally support and build consensus.”

Mrs Ayamga’s nomination follows a period of mourning in the district, and Lawyer Anaba said that context should encourage a smooth process.

“We are still mourning, and if the president in his wisdom has nominated someone, we should rally behind the person for continuity,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the ruling party’s majority in the assembly would facilitate her confirmation but cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the need for party leadership to maintain unity.

Lawyer Anaba also urged assembly members to resist external influence and prioritize what he described as the “Bongo agenda.”

“It should be Bongo first,” he said. “We cannot have two DCEs at a time. Once someone has been nominated, we must support that person to move the district forward.”
