The Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children, Georgina Aberese-Ako, has called on parents, particularly fathers to be more responsible in providing for their children’s basic needs, urging them to make deliberate efforts to save towards their children’s wellbeing.

Madam Aberese-Ako made the call on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast Today show, where she expressed concern over a troubling pattern she has observed in many homes across the region.

She noted that some men frequently gather at drinking spots to socialise with friends and spend money on alcohol, while their children, especially daughters are left without access to basic necessities such as sanitary pads and other essential items.

She did not spare women either, noting that unnecessary spending on clothing was equally a concern when children’s needs remained unmet.

“Every night we see some men sitting at spots drinking, women buying yaye [clothes]. If you sacrifice to save some money towards your child, it wouldn’t be bad at all,” she said.

Madam Aberese-Ako called on all parents to reflect on their spending habits and prioritise the welfare of their children, stressing that small, consistent savings could go a long way in meeting the needs of their wards.
