North East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Sulley Sambian, has officially declared his intention to contest the Regional Chairmanship.
The private legal practitioner made the announcement to the media, framing his bid around experience, competence, and the stakes of the 2028 elections.
Describing himself as tried and tested, Sambian said the NPP needs tactical leadership in the home region of flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He stated that the NPP cannot afford to fail Ghanaians in the 2028 polls, especially since this is the home region of the party’s flagbearer. He added that the party needs someone capable with the expertise to marshal resources and reclaim lost ground, and assured that he has been tested and tried in various capacities and will deliver.
He argued that regaining lost ground requires more than rhetoric. His goal, he said, is to make the North East a stronghold for the NPP and deliver the region for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid.
Sambian will face incumbent Regional Chairman Nurudeen, who was retained at the last Regional Conference in Nalerigu on May 27, 2022. At that conference, Nurudeen won with 71 of 146 valid votes, a 21 vote margin over his closest challenger, former Yagaba Kubore Constituency Chairman Akamara Bawah Henry, who polled 50 votes.
Sambian himself was retained as Regional Secretary that same day, polling 106 of 146 votes, the highest among the contestants.
With 2028 approaching, the North East contest is shaping up to be a test of strategy versus incumbency. Sambian is selling experience and delivery, while Nurudeen will defend his record as chairman. The conference date for the next regional elections is scheduled for August 8 to August 9, 2026, according to a communiqué earlier issued by the National Executive Committee of the party.
