Political analyst Fidelis Aturah Ayam has backed calls for closer scrutiny of aspects of Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation, saying some concerns raised by the Minority in Parliament deserve serious consideration.

Speaking on The State of Our Nation on Dreamz FM, Mr. Ayam argued that while political considerations may influence parts of the debate, lawmakers should carefully examine provisions affecting the media, academia and legal practice.

“I am not interested in the politics surrounding the bill, but there are important issues that have been raised which deserve attention,” he said.

Mr. Ayam expressed concern that loopholes within the legislation could allow indirect promotion of LGBTQ-related ideas through academic publications, media engagements and legal advocacy.

He argued that lawmakers must clearly define what constitutes promotion to avoid ambiguity during implementation.

According to him, discussions surrounding freedom of expression, legal representation and academic research require careful balancing to ensure that the objectives of the legislation are not undermined.

“The law must be structured carefully so that people do not exploit loopholes to advance what the legislation seeks to prohibit,” he stated.

His comments come amid ongoing national debate over proposed amendments and the future direction of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ legislation.
