Political analyst Fidelis Aturah Ayam has attributed the growing wave of indiscipline among students to what he describes as years of policy decisions that have weakened the authority of teachers and school administrators.
Speaking on The State of Our Nation programme on Dreamz FM, Mr. Ayam argued that schools have increasingly lost the ability to effectively discipline students, contributing to a broader moral decline in society.
According to him, government policies that discourage corporal punishment and restrict disciplinary measures have left teachers powerless in dealing with misconduct.
“For the past two decades, there has been a growing trend of indiscipline in schools. Teachers are no longer protected when they discipline students, and society often sides with the child rather than the teacher,” he said.
Mr. Ayam maintained that teachers now operate under fear of sanctions and public backlash, making many reluctant to enforce discipline.
He called for a review of educational policies to grant teachers greater flexibility in administering corrective punishments aimed at reforming students rather than harming them.
“Teachers spend more time with children than their parents do. If we deny them the tools to shape behaviour, society will continue to experience moral degeneration,” he stressed.
The analyst further urged the government and parents to support schools in restoring discipline, warning that the country risks producing generations of students who are increasingly difficult to manage.
