Former Mayor of Kumasi under the Mahama’s administration, Kojo Bonsu has said his job as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ashanti Regional’s capital inspired him to run for the presidency.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM, Mr. Bonsu said, although he had been in the political scenes for long, he only realized his capacity to stir the affairs of the country as president when he assumed office as mayor for Kumasi
He indicated that his job as a mayor equipped him with leadership skills and has positioned him to serve in the highest office of the land, adding that running the city as its head is same as managing the affairs of the country hence, his quest to become president of Ghana.
“I have been in Ghana’s politics for quite some time but always behind the scenes until I became the mayor of Kumasi and I realize that I can serve this country. That is where I got my inspiration from when I became the mayor of Kumasi. Running a city like Kumasi is like running a country because Kumasi, you go through a lot and you build a lot of leadership skills and you have to serve the people and let the people know that you are for them. So when you play that role, you get the feeling that you can do something and I have a lot to give to Ghanaians that I haven’t really open up. So this is the time for me to come serve the country that I was born in,” he stated.
Kojo Bonsu, who served as MCE for Kumasi from 2013 to 2016, is among a number of stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are lacing their boots to contest former president, John Dramani Mahama in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Prior to the 2020 Elections, he had announced his intention to run for the NDC’s presidential candidacy but along the line drop out of the race.
Mr. Bonsu has, however, given the strongest signals of pushing through with his decision to bid for the opposition party’s presidential ticket this time around and will not back out.
Political watchers, however, say he and the other potential aspirants do not stand a chance of making it should former president Mahama decides to run again.
