Family of slain investigative journalist, Ahmed Husein Suale has taken on Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for what they say is his continuous desecration of the memory of the slain journalist.
In a statement issued today, August 16, 2023, the family said the MP, after instigating attacks on the journalist which led to his death, has consistently peddled falsehoods and distorted facts in attempt to absolve himself of blame and belittle the consequences of his action.
“We find it bizzare that even after his gruesome murder, Kennedy Agyapong continues to desecrate his memory with lies and distortions,” they said in the stated.
The statement comes on the back of Mr. Agyapong’s latest comments on the matter.
In an interview on Citi TV, the MP, who is seeking to be the governing NPP flagbearer, justified publicly displaying pictures of the slain journalist and inciting violence against him which eventually led to his gruesome murder.
According to Mr. Agyapong, the slain journalist and his boss, Anas Aremeyaw Anas used unethical mundus operandi to entrap and embarrassed high profile personalities particularly public officials in their investigations.
He said his action was to expose these unethical methods deployed by the two in their investigations and alert unsuspecting members of the public about their activities.
Mr. Agyapong, however, denied that his call for the journalist to be attacked led to his killing.
He claimed that while he was displaying pictures of the journalist on his TV station, his employees informed him that Ahmed Suale had been coming to his premises and that he (Mr. Agyapong) had even paid his school fees at a point in time.
It was on the basis of this that he instructed his workers to beat him up if he showed up at the premises again as he believed he was up to no good.
He insists he did not call for his attack outside his premises thus, he cannot be blamed for the murder of the journalist.
But quoting verbatim what the MP had said on Net2 TV, the family asserted that Mr. Agyapong did not only reveal Ahmed Suale’s identity and residential location but call on the public to attack him wherever they found him for a ransom which he (Mr. Agyapong) was willing to pay.
They contended that the journalist, who was an undercover reporter for Tiger Eye PI working on BBC projects, would not have been killed if the MP had not exposed his identity and location to the public.
“It was his extremely reckless and criminal conduct that led to the death of our brother. It was reckless for him to have shown the photos of Ahmed on his Net 2 TV while revealing his residential location”.
They said the MP’s continuous attempt to absolve himself from the heinous crime by peddling falsehoods and faulting the deceased’s professionalism is not only untenable but a desecration of the memory of the slain journalist.
The family also refuted Mr. Agyapong’s claim that he paid Ahmed Suale’s fees, stating “that is another barefaced lie which Kennedy Agyapong concocted after his reckless behaviour led to the death of Ahmed to soften the blow back effect of his conduct”.
While expressing disappointment at the police for not making any progress on the matter especially when the deceased himself had submitted substantial evidence to the service before his murder, they stated “By his lack of remorse and frantic defence of his conduct, the family is doubtful that Ahmed would ever get justice under a misfortune where Kennedy Agyapong becomes the president of Ghana”.
The family further expressed their disquiet with the host of the show on Citi TV for allowing Mr. Agyapong “get away with many lies which we have refuted in the past”.
They urged the media to be circumspect and sensitive when reporting on the matter, warning to take legal action against any media outlet that “continues to entertain the lies of Kennedy Agyapong”.
