Health experts are urging greater public awareness and early diagnosis of asthma, as cases continue to affect both children and adults in the Upper East Region.

During a World Asthma Day discussion on Dreamz FM, doctors from the Upper East Regional Hospital said many people still misinterpret symptoms or rely on ineffective treatments.

Physician Specialist Dr. Bedu Tetteh said common symptoms include persistent cough, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, often triggered by dust, smoke, strong perfumes and other environmental factors.

He noted that asthma can begin as early as childhood and may worsen if left untreated.

The doctors stressed that asthma is not curable but can be effectively managed with proper medication and lifestyle adjustments.

Senior Medical Officer Dr. Yussif Adams said patients must identify and avoid triggers, especially if they have a family history of the condition.

He also warned against misconceptions, including beliefs that asthma is spiritual or that inhalers are addictive.

“There is no evidence that herbal remedies can cure asthma,” Adams said, urging patients to seek medical diagnosis and treatment.

Medical Officer Dr. Tomilola Ogunbanwo added that some common medications, including certain painkillers, can worsen asthma symptoms and should be avoided.

The specialists called for a collective effort involving government, healthcare providers and communities to improve asthma care, including better access to medication and education on proper inhaler use.

They also encouraged patients to adhere strictly to prescribed treatments to prevent severe attacks and complications.
